Join us for an in-person community gathering celebrating World IA Day at the Think Company studios in Center City on March 7!&#x20;

This event is open to designers, information architects, content strategists, UX writers, and all UX professionals who care about making sense of complex information.

This is a space to reconnect with the Philadelphia IA community, learn from each other, and be inspired by the work happening around us. Whether you've been part of the local design community for years or you're new to Philadelphia, you'll find a welcoming group of people who are passionate about information architecture and creating better experiences for users.

[World IA Day](https://www.information-architecture.world/worldiaday/) is an annual celebration that inspires the global growth of Information Architecture as a community of practice. Hosted by the Information Architecture Institute since 2012, WIAD events are held in dozens of locations across the globe.

Over the years Julie Guinn has had the opportunity to open many a dusty, forgotten database and rummage around, leading to to archeological and forensic expeditions into the hearts, minds, and exotic tech workarounds of software users. In this light hearted talk, Julie will showcase some of the oddities and amusements found in the deeper reaches of enterprise data stores and reflect on what we can learn from it if we let our curiosity lead us.

This talk is about the value of embracing curiosity about the unknown, what you can learn if you take the time to look around in places others have dismissed, and finding patterns in unstructured or unintentionally structured data sets.

TED Talks, ResearchGate, Alexa, and Buzzfeed cater to different types of curiosity. In this talk, Lyndon Cerejo will map Daniel Berlyne’s model of curiosity to sites and apps that address people’s curiosity: be it the desire to explore, learn, find a specific answer, or be stimulated. He presents examples of curiosity being aroused and fed through design of sites, apps, and communication.

What do the design process and leadership development have in common? A lot, as it turns out. After nearly a decade of working in leadership development, Megan Moser recently transitioned to a career in UX. Along the way, she became increasingly curious about the many parallels between UX and leadership. In this talk, she will explore the overlap between the two and how as designers, we can harness our experiences to improve our skills, abilities, and confidence as leaders.&#x20;

Curiosity over time can be a challenge. As we age, responsibility can take priority over exploration. And yet, as stewards of "great experiences" our ability to learn and grow is crucial to our success, especially this past year. As a creative professional, Mike Gadsby has always admired artists like David Bowie. His career was marked by his ability to constantly reinvent himself. He never stuck to a single genre or style. In fact, there are times when he shifted his focus entirely into new platforms (did you know he was a Web designer?). In this talk, Mike will explore several eras and themes of Bowie's life as his influences, creativity and curiosity transformed over time and relate that his own professional experiences over the past few years.

### **Play in Difficult Times: Fostering Conversation on Challenging Topics Through Collaborative Gameplay**

[Danielle Chen](/community/danielle-chen), Senior Designer at EY Design Studio PHL

It’s an inevitable part of life: every once in awhile we have to tell another person something we know they don’t want to hear. Although there are products and services that aim to help people recognize and move through discomfort on an individual level, few support or facilitate group-based discussions of sensitive social or personal issues. Danielle, along with two teammates, developed a board game called “rekindling” to fill this gap. It uses collaborative gameplay to help families affected by cancer develop a greater understanding of one another by encouraging them to talk about the disease and gather around the table for a fun moment of family connection.

If you’re planning to develop a product that aims to encourage people to participate in any sort of discussion or debate, it’s important to first consider the format and design elements that will support those goals. So how can you create a product or service that helps people effectively navigate through an issue while also ensuring a delightful and engaging user experience? In this talk, Danielle will focus on the challenges that could arise when creating products that encourage conversations, especially around more difficult topics. Danielle will provide criteria for selecting an effective format that will accomplish the product’s mission while still making for a productive and fun user experience, and highlight specific elements from the rekindling game that were designed to facilitate and enhance the user experience.

### **From Information Architecture to Experience Architecture**

[Keith Karn](/community/keith-karn), Principal Consultant at Human Factors in Context

Thinking more inclusively of human interaction with machines allows us to see how the skills of information architects can be applied to products with both digital and physical user interaction. In a lively, interactive presentation, Keith will show examples from his past work that demonstrates how the architecture of information presentation can be considered more holistically as the architecture of the user experience. When both physical and digital interactions with a product are considered, the definition of the user experience architecture must link user research, industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, software development, human factors/ergonomics, interaction design, technical writing, marketing, and systems engineering. As the internet-of-things continues to flourish, we should anticipate this need to consider both physical and digital interactions with many types of products.

### **Information Architecture: A Tool to Address Health Disparities**

[George Demiris](/community/george-demiris), Ph.D., FACMI, Professor at University of Pennsylvania

Health disparities and structural disempowerment persist as perpetuated processes reflect a bias embedded in social practices and even in the design of health systems and health-related technologies. Structures put in place to facilitate measurement and investment, as well as definitions of innovation and progress, reflect collective priorities. As we have traditionally sourced these priorities from systems rather than equitably from citizens, families, and communities who have long held the wisdom and experience necessary to achieve societal health and effective healthcare, we have not yet effectively measured and harnessed the power of innovation to the problems that matter most to their lives. Policymakers, health system leaders, technology companies and designers are called upon to incentivize and create accountability for health equity and the empowerment of patients and communities. In this talk, we discuss ways in which information architecture tools can be used to ameliorate disparities and advance equity, embed community wisdom in the configuration, implementation and ethical oversight of new technology design. We provide specific examples from the Health Information Technology space and discuss a call for action. This talk is conceptualized as a presentation followed by discussion.

### **Collaborative Content Modeling: Bringing Information Architecture Into Focus for Cross-Functional Teams**

[Jasmine Patel](/community/jasmine-patel), Senior Interactive Designer at Philadelphia Museum of Art

Helping a museum rethink how it presents its art online involved multiple stakeholders (both technical and non-technical), more than 175,000 data records (and growing), and a push to keep the user's needs at the center of the conversation. This talk outlines how I helped the Philadelphia Museum of Art's cross-departmental team to focus on the data and visitor's information needs first when redesigning their online art collection. I will share how I used the technique of content modeling to help museum stakeholders understand why and how information architecture is an essential step to planning the redesign of the museum's digital collection. I plan to incorporate feedback from the museum's senior designer who I assisted with overseeing the project. Attendees should expect to learn about the real-world application of content models and its impact on web design and development.

While we don’t have a Hippocratic Oath, it’s important for us to follow a similar goal to “do good” and “do not harm.” It is our responsibility as IAs to consider the consequences and impact our design decisions hae on humanity and society as a whole.

### **Architecting Research Studies**

[**Andrew Golaszewski**](/community/andrew-golaszewski), Independent UX Research and Design Consultant

Successfully designing for differences between people is only possible through solid user research that can be easily translated and applied to the design process. In this talk, we’ll cover using IA principles and skills to better plan, execute, and analyze user research studies. Many aspects of the research process are driven by their embedded information structures. Recruitment screeners, interview guides, field notes, and study reports all require thoughtful information architecture to be successful. We’ll discuss applying IA to each phase of a research study, and provide advice and resources for people looking to improve their research practice (or start one!).<br>

### **Designing Delight for Undelightful Experiences**

Designing to make a difference in a user’s life often means wrestling with the idea of designing delight in undelightful experiences. What do designers do when faced with patients with cancer? Or a student who can’t pay back their loans? We as designers cannot fix every problem that these users face, and many of their pain points we discover have severe consequences. Identifying small, but meaningful, opportunities is how we can design to make a difference. This talk will include case examples of research and projects from healthcare and higher education as well as overarching principles I’ve developed to help identify areas of opportunity for social impact fields.<br>

### **Design for Cognitive Bias**

[**David Dylan Thomas**](/community/david-dylan-thomas), Principal, Content Strategy at Think Company

Your mind takes shortcuts to get through the day. We call these cognitive biases. Usually they’re harmless. Even helpful. But what happens when they’re not? In this talk we’ll identify some particularly nasty biases and the kinds of design and content strategy steps we can take to keep them in check, or even turn them to a user’s advantage. The talk focuses on biased design that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. It also discusses the biases that affect us as designers and how a key way to combat them is to redefine our jobs (kind of like a Hippocratic Oath) in a way that allows us to treat each other and our users like humans instead of just customers.

The "Curse of Knowledge." This is when an expert knows too much about a product and makes assumptions about what others know, which can lead to a mangled experience. The digital version of this is when a system makes automated assumptions of the end user's goal.

This information overload is both a blessing and a curse. The more teams/systems involved the bigger the mess, but the more thorough the information becomes. As information architects, we need to create an understandable version of that mess and present the users with simplified, non-presumptuous information upon which to act.

**INFORMATION EVERYWHERE, ARCHITECTS EVERYWHERE**

Our world is full of information. Whether we are using the latest mobile app, watching the local news, or navigating our way through the post office or grocery store, information is all around us. Because of the ubiquitous nature of information, information architecture is not just practiced by specialists. Instead information is architected by people holding all sorts of titles, coming from all walks of life.

World IA Day focuses on the telling these kinds of stories. Stories of information being architected by everyone from teachers to business owners; technologists to artists; designers to product managers. With representation from 39 countries around the world, we believe that the power of similarity and the beauty of difference between these stories will inspire those who work in information architecture, as well as those who may be new to it.

**WORLD IA DAY - ARCHITECTING HAPPINESS**

When information is clear and considerate of the context in which we need it, there is a certain peaceful joy that washes over us. We feel loved or cared for. We crave the feeling that someone carefully considered our needs and expectations.&#x20;

Whether it is the details that the chef has provided about the seasonal items on her menu or the interface that allows you to see the real time progress of robots racing on the moon, information holds the power to make us happy, gleeful, joyful, giddy, intrigued, relieved, enthralled and many other potent cocktails of emotions.&#x20;

Our world is increasingly made of information, yet so much of that information is not as clear or accessible as it could be to those it is intended for. Every organization out there seems to say that they want to make their users happy, but who is really delivering on those promises? Who is really architecting for happiness?&#x20;

On February 21, 2015 we want to ask the world to help us uncover answers to questions we believe to be critical to the future of how we practice information architecture:\

Auldyn Matthews has 5+ years of researching and designing user experiences to make a more compassionate world. Currently she works at Elsevier, a medical publishing and technology company, as a Senior User Experience Designer improving the patient education experience. I’m a Senior UX Designer at EY Design Studio PHL (part of Ernst & Young LLP), a user-centered research, design and development studio based in Philadelphia. Prior to EY, I worked at both Hasbro and Penn Medicine, developing products ranging from electromechanical toys to diagnostics apps. I have a master’s degree in Integrated Product Design from the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2018, I co-founded “rekindling”, a board game designed to help families develop empathy for and communicate with one another while navigating through a tough time. “rekindling” encourages families to physically gather around the table and talk about difficult subjects through collaborative gameplay.

My talk on fostering conversation on challenging topics through collaborative gameplay will draw on my experiences in toy, healthcare, and user experience design.

Debra Gelman is a leader, strategist, author, and practitioner in the digital design and user experience space. She leads UX and design teams in the creation of transformative digital products for B2B, healthcare, commerce, financial services, and publishing industries. Deb manages a team of designers and researchers who take a data-driven approach to design, using quantitative and qualitative metrics to innovate and inform how products will look and function. In addition to articles in leading industry publications, Deb is the author of Design For Kids, published by Rosenfeld Media in 2014. She creates sites, apps and virtual worlds for clients including PBS Kids Sprout, Scholastic, Crayola, Pepperidge Farm, Campbell’s Soup and Georgia Public Television. Deb led the research and design of Planet Orange—a site designed to teach 1st through 6th graders financial literacy—which won a USA Today Education “Best Bet” award.

Deb holds undergraduate degrees in Visual Media and Psychology from American University, and a Masters in Information Design and Technology from Georgia Tech. She lives in the Philadelphia area with her very patient husband and her precocious daughter, who wants to be a princess paleontologist when she grows up.&#x20;

# George Demiris

George Demiris, PhD, FACMI, is a Penn Integrates Knowledge University Professor at the University of Pennsylvania (in the Department of Biobehavioral Health Sciences, School of Nursing with a joint appointment in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics, Perelman School of Medicine). He received his PhD in Health Informatics from the University of Minnesota. He is a Member of the National Academy of Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics and the Gerontological Society of America. His research is exploring innovative ways to utilize technology and support patients and their families in various settings including home and hospice care. He also studies “smart home” solutions for aging, and digitally augmented residential settings to facilitate passive monitoring and support independence and quality of life for community dwelling older adults. He has conducted numerous federally funded studies and his work has been funded consistently over the years both by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). His research provides evidence-based recommendations as to how to design systems that are easily adopted by older adults and integrated in their lives. He has examined the challenges of privacy and obtrusiveness in the context of technology use, and he has provided a comprehensive examination of technical, ethical, and practical challenges associated with the use of technology to support aging.

Keith S. Karn, PhD is the founder and principal consultant of Human Factors in Context LLC, a consulting firm offering user research, human factors engineering, and physical / digital interaction design. Keith has been steeped in human-centered design since strapping himself into the ejection seat of a supersonic airplane during his first human factors job in the early '80s. Since then he has trekked across mountains, slogged through coal mines, and trailed ER docs, all in the pursuit of user research to fuel product innovation and design. Before starting Human Factors in Context, he led user research and design teams at Bresslergroup, Design Science, Xerox, and Kodak. He earned his PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Rochester and degrees in Ergonomics and Systems / Industrial Engineering at North Carolina State University and Penn State. He taught human factors and human-computer interaction for many years at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Rochester. He has 15 utility patents. Fun Fact: When his patent for a wearable, mountable video camera issued, GoPro's stock price tanked briefly.
